ADHD: More Than a Focus Problem

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often boiled down to “can’t sit still” or “can’t pay attention,” but anyone living with it knows it’s much more complex. It’s a neurodevelopmental condition that affects executive function -how we plan, organize, prioritize, and manage impulses. And it can impact kids, teens, and adults alike.

Symptoms can look different from person to person:

  • Inattentive type → daydreaming, losing track of time, forgetfulness.

  • Hyperactive/Impulsive type → restlessness, fidgeting, speaking without a filter.

  • Combined type → a mix of both.

While conventional treatment often focuses on stimulant medications (which can be effective), functional medicine digs deeper—asking why the brain is struggling to regulate focus, mood, and behavior in the first place.

ADHD isn’t caused by just one thing, and it certainly isn’t fixed with a one-size-fits-all plan. Functional medicine looks at biochemical individuality—your unique combination of genetics, nutrition, gut health, environment, and lifestyle.

Here are some of the root factors we investigate:

1. Nutrient Deficiencies

  • Low magnesium, zinc, iron (especially ferritin), B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids are all linked to ADHD symptoms.

  • Iron deficiency, for example, can affect dopamine signaling—the neurotransmitter heavily involved in focus and motivation.

2. Blood Sugar Imbalances

  • ADHD brains already struggle with dopamine regulation; add in blood sugar spikes and crashes, and focus tanks.

  • Unstable blood sugar can mimic anxiety, worsen impulsivity, and fuel mood swings.

3. Gut-Brain Axis Dysfunction

  • Gut dysbiosis and increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) can lead to inflammation that impacts neurotransmitter production.

  • Certain gut bacteria even produce dopamine and serotonin precursors.

4. Food Sensitivities & Allergies

  • Artificial dyes, preservatives, and allergens like gluten or dairy can trigger behavioral symptoms in some individuals.

  • IgG food sensitivity testing can help identify inflammatory triggers.

5. Toxin Exposure

  • Heavy metals (lead, mercury), mold toxins (mycotoxins), and environmental chemicals can impair brain function and neurotransmitter balance.

  • Detoxification pathways may need support, especially in those with MTHFR or other genetic variants.

6. Sleep Quality

  • ADHD brains are already working overtime. Poor sleep—whether from apnea, restless legs, or late-night scrolling—magnifies inattention and hyperactivity.

Functional Medicine Testing for ADHD

Rather than guessing, I test. Common assessments include:

  • Micronutrient testing → to find deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.

  • GI mapping / stool analysis → to assess gut health, microbiome balance, and inflammation.

  • Food sensitivity testing → to uncover dietary triggers.

  • HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) → to evaluate mineral ratios and heavy metal burden.

  • Organic Acids Test (OAT) → to assess neurotransmitter metabolites, mitochondrial function, and oxidative stress.

Why This Approach Works

Instead of patching symptoms, we’re optimizing the brain’s environment—reducing inflammation, stabilizing energy, and improving neurotransmitter function. This doesn’t mean medications are off the table; in fact, combining functional medicine strategies with conventional therapies often produces the best results.

ADHD isn’t a “flaw” in personality—it’s a different wiring that can be supported by addressing the root causes. Functional medicine meets ADHD with curiosity, science, and personalization, creating a plan that improves focus, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.

And YES, you can have your current ADHD medications prescribed as well! I became certified in ADHD and have worked virtually with patients since 2023.
